One pet parent shares why adopting a guinea pig turned out to be one of the best decisions he has made.

If you had told me a few years ago that one of the best parts of my day would be coming home to a guinea pig, I probably would have laughed.

I’ve always liked animals, but I never really saw myself as a dog person, and getting a cat didn’t feel right either. I wanted a pet, but I also wanted something that fit my personality and my life. After doing some research and visiting a local rescue, I started considering guinea pigs.

When I told my friends and family, everyone had an opinion.

“A guinea pig? Why?”

“Why not just get a dog?”

“Isn’t that a pet for kids?”

For a while, my guinea pig became a running joke in the group chat. Then they actually met him.

I Didn’t Expect a Guinea Pig to Have This Much Personality

I think that’s the biggest thing people misunderstand about guinea pigs. Before I had one, I assumed they mostly sat around eating and looking cute.

I was very wrong.

Mine knows when I’m nearby. He has different sounds depending on what he wants, gets ridiculously excited about food, and has somehow learned parts of my routine better than some of my friends have.

There is something funny about having a bad day, walking through the door, and immediately hearing this tiny animal making noise because he’s happy you’re home.

Guinea pigs are social animals and can form bonds with the people caring for them, although they also have important social needs involving other guinea pigs. That social side of owning one was something I didn’t fully understand until I became a guinea pig parent myself.

He Gave Me a Routine I Didn’t Know I Needed

One of the biggest changes has been my routine.

There are things that have to happen whether I’ve had a great day or a terrible one. Food needs to be handled. Fresh water needs to be available. His space needs attention. He needs interaction and enrichment.

That responsibility has actually been good for me.

I spend more time at home without feeling like I’m doing nothing. I’ve learned to slow down. Sometimes I’ll sit near him after work, put my phone down, and just watch him explore or eat.

It sounds small, but those quiet moments have become some of my favorite parts of the day.

My Friends Don’t Make Fun of Me Anymore

Well, not as much.

The funny part is that some of the same people who questioned why I would adopt a guinea pig now ask about him when they come over. One friend who used to make jokes about my “giant hamster” now brings him vegetables.

My family asks for pictures.

He’s become part of the conversation because people eventually realize that the kind of animal you love doesn’t really matter. The connection does.

Dogs and cats are great pets, but they aren’t the only animals capable of becoming an important part of someone’s home.

Choosing an Unconventional Pet Taught Me Something

I think people sometimes choose pets based on what they’re used to seeing rather than what actually works for their lives.

I’m glad I didn’t do that.

Becoming a guinea pig owner has taught me patience and made me more responsible. It’s given me companionship, structure, and plenty of ridiculous stories to send my friends.

It has also made my home feel different. There is another little life here that depends on me and is noticeably excited when I show up.

I didn’t adopt him expecting him to change my life. I just wanted a pet.

Turns out, I got a friend.

And yes, the best part of my day has fur.
